Close approach of the Moon and Saturn

The Moon and Saturn will make a close approach, passing within a mere 44.7 arcminutes of each other. From some parts of the world, the Moon will pass in front of Saturn, creating a lunar occultation. The Moon will be 25 days old.

From Cambridge , the pair will be difficult to observe as they will appear no higher than 13° above the horizon. They will be visible in the dawn sky, rising at 03:32 (EST) – 2 hours and 2 minutes before the Sun – and reaching an altitude of 13° above the eastern horizon before fading from view as dawn breaks at around 04:50.

The Moon will be at mag -11.1; and Saturn will be at mag 1.0. Both objects will lie in the constellation Aquarius.

They will be a little too widely separated to fit comfortably within the field of view of a telescope, but will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
