Conjunction of the Moon and Mars

The Moon and Mars will share the same right ascension, with the Moon passing 1°20' to the north of Mars. The Moon will be 27 days old.

At around the same time, the two objects will also make a close approach, technically called an appulse.

From Los Angeles , the pair will be difficult to observe as they will appear no higher than 17° above the horizon. They will be visible in the dawn sky, rising at 04:01 (PST) – 2 hours and 14 minutes before the Sun – and reaching an altitude of 17° above the eastern horizon before fading from view as dawn breaks at around 05:31.

The Moon will be at mag -9.5, and Mars at mag 1.8, both in the constellation Virgo.

The pair will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.
