Close approach of the Moon and Venus

The Moon and Venus will make a close approach, passing within a mere 8.4 arcminutes of each other. From some parts of the world, the Moon will pass in front of Venus, creating a lunar occultation. The Moon will be 27 days old.

From Jacksonville , the pair will be visible in the dawn sky, rising at 04:30 (EDT) – 2 hours and 42 minutes before the Sun – and reaching an altitude of 30° above the eastern horizon before fading from view as dawn breaks at around 06:57.

The Moon will be at mag -10.2; and Venus will be at mag -4.0. Both objects will lie in the constellation Leo.

They will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
