Close approach of the Moon, Saturn and Neptune

The Moon, Saturn and Neptune will make a close approach, passing within 7°39' of each other. The Moon will be 10 days old.

From South El Monte , the trio will become visible at around 20:44 (PDT), 49° above your southern horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. They will then sink towards the horizon, setting at 02:01.

The Moon will be at mag -12.1; Saturn will be at mag 0.4; and Neptune will be at mag 7.9. The trio will lie in the constellation Virgo.

They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope or pair of binoculars, but will be visible to the naked eye.

At around the same time, the trio will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
