Close approach of the Moon and Mars

The Moon and Mars will make a close approach, passing within 6°37' of each other. The Moon will be 14 days old.

From South El Monte , the pair will be visible between 19:48 and 06:20. They will become accessible at around 19:48, when they rise to an altitude of 7° above your eastern horizon. They will reach their highest point in the sky at 01:04, 54° above your southern horizon. They will become inaccessible at around 06:20 when they sink below 7° above your western horizon.

The Moon will be at mag -12.8 in Pisces; and Mars will be at mag -2.8 in Cetus.

They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope or pair of binoculars, but will be visible to the naked eye.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
