Close approach of the Moon and Mercury

The Moon and Mercury will make a close approach, passing within a mere 9.8 arcminutes of each other. From some parts of the world, the Moon will pass in front of Mercury, creating a lunar occultation. The Moon will be 1 days old.

From Columbus , the pair will become visible at around 19:57 (EDT), 12° above your western horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. They will then sink towards the horizon, setting 1 hour and 33 minutes after the Sun at 21:07.

The Moon will be at mag -8.8; and Mercury will be at mag -0.4. Both objects will lie in the constellation Pisces.

They will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
