Close approach of the Moon, Mars and Neptune

The Moon, Mars and Neptune will make a close approach, passing within 6°23' of each other. The Moon will be 7 days old.

From South El Monte , the trio will become visible at around 18:16 (PDT), 72° above your south-western horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. They will then sink towards the horizon, setting at 00:22.

The Moon will be at mag -11.9; Mars will be at mag 0.8; and Neptune will be at mag 7.9. The trio will lie in the constellation Taurus.

They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope or pair of binoculars, but will be visible to the naked eye.

At around the same time, the trio will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
