Close approach of the Moon and Jupiter

The Moon and Jupiter will make a close approach, passing within a mere 26.1 arcminutes of each other. From some parts of the world, the Moon will pass in front of Jupiter, creating a lunar occultation. The Moon will be 3 days old.

From Fairfield , the pair will become visible at around 20:35 (EDT), 21° above your western horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. They will then sink towards the horizon, setting 2 hours and 20 minutes after the Sun at 22:36.

The Moon will be at mag -10.9; and Jupiter will be at mag -1.8. Both objects will lie in the constellation Leo.

They will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
