Close approach of the Moon and Jupiter

The Moon and Jupiter will make a close approach, passing within 5°02' of each other. The Moon will be 4 days old.

From South El Monte , the pair will become visible at around 18:23 (PDT), 27° above your south-western horizon, as dusk fades to darkness. They will then sink towards the horizon, setting 3 hours and 30 minutes after the Sun at 21:38.

The Moon will be at mag -11.3; and Jupiter will be at mag -2.0. Both objects will lie in the constellation Sagittarius.

They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope or pair of binoculars, but will be visible to the naked eye.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
