Close approach of Saturn and Mars

The planets Saturn and Mars will make a close approach, passing within a mere 28.4 arcminutes of each other.

From South El Monte , the pair will be visible in the dawn sky, rising at 01:25 (PDT) and reaching an altitude of 48° above the south-eastern horizon before fading from view as dawn breaks at around 05:40.

Saturn will be at mag 0.9; and Mars will be at mag 1.5. Both objects will lie in the constellation Virgo.

They will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible to the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
