Close approach of the Moon and Jupiter

The Moon and Jupiter will make a close approach, passing within 5°11' of each other. The Moon will be 25 days old.

From Cambridge , the pair will be visible in the dawn sky, rising at 01:13 (EDT) and reaching an altitude of 48° above the south-eastern horizon before fading from view as dawn breaks at around 05:58.

The Moon will be at mag -11.2 in Sextans; and Jupiter will be at mag -1.9 in Leo.

They will be too widely separated to fit within the field of view of a telescope or pair of binoculars, but will be visible to the naked eye.

At around the same time, the pair will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
